Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs - Military

Posted on 27 December 2007 by Admin

Military Rugby:

Welcome to the Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs, the military rugby team of the Tacoma Nomads Rugby Club. The Tacoma Rugby Club and the Ft. Lewis Studs Dawgs are made up of players from the Tacoma and Puget Sound area, including McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis Army Post.

Who are the Stud Dawgs:

A military team was passing through Ft. Lewis in 1989 and wanted to play another mility team so. . . . Captain Mike Legg got most of the Army rugby guys together with a few extra Nomads, and went for it. The Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs were born. That was the beginning of Military Rugby on Ft. Lewis. The Stud dawgs are named after Mike’s beloved pooch, Norman (R.I.P.).

The Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs activate several times throughtout the year to play other military sides in the area and to host visiting military sides from other countries when they tour the beautiful Puget Sound area. The Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs have a great history of play and good times.

Our most recent sucess is our Annual Army - Navy Game. This past year saw a comfortable victory of the local Navy side from Bremerton.

Branch of Service: Majority US Army, both USAR &ARNG members. Also active members from USAF and USMC and reserve.

Team Colors: The most recent team colors are black socks and black shorts. White jersey in Godek Eagle pattern, red and blue hoops with red numbers. They were always gray before John Dacey came along.

Stud Dawgs Contacts:

For all questions and or concerns about the Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs contact,

Nick Punimata - 1st Special Forces Group
By cell phone 253-222-1178
By email punimatn@soc.mil  or  fortlewisrugby@yahoo.com

Our Goals:

Our primary goal as military rugby players in the South Puget Sound area, is to simply contribute to the sucess of the Tacoma Nomad Rugby Club and to improve the level of play for all military rugby players in the Pacific Northwest.

  • We would like to continue to work with the Fort Lewis Youth Service program. In helping them start and continue to run their Youth Touch Rugby Program on post.  Continue to help start and run a U19 / Youth Rugby in the Fort Lewis area.
  • We would like to increase the population of military players and enter a Fort Lewis team in the annual Military Club National Tournament each year.
  • We would like to increase the amount of representative level military players. We have a number of high quality military players and coaches with select side experience with the All Army Rugby Team, as well with the US Combined Service Rugby Program.

Our Future:

We will continue to increase the quality and the population of military rugby players in the South Puget Sound Area. We have developed an outstanding relationship with the leadership across Fort Lewis over the last several years. We look to expand that relationship with the great folks on McCord Air Force Base and in the Pacific Northwest Rugby Union.

Weather you are an experienced player or new to the game. Don’t hesitate to contact us at fortlewisrugby@yahoo.com
